I want to Bumpit!

Totally ridiculous!

Featured Artist: Candice Breitz

So, I had an assignment to pick an artist from our book IceCream and teach the class about this artist for an hour. This seemed pretty daunting at first but as I got to researching, I realized that I could do this. I chose Candice Breitz, who is a really well educated, impressive artist. She has had a ton of shows displaying her video installations, which are based on pop culture/hollywood. Her website is amazing and simple. You can see all of her work and watch the videos directly from the webiste! Her installations are funny and entertaining, but if you look and read further into her work, you will see that there is a deeper meaning.

"In making these works, the artist invited a series of fans of the respective icons to each re-perform an entire album by Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley or John Lennon. In each of the final installations, the filmed performers re-sing the relevant album in synchronization with each other, their performances merging into a kaleidoscope of voices, facial expressions and body language, to constitute a diverse collective interaction with a pop icon"

"I’m effectively surveying a community of consumers who are in dialogue with the music of a particular pop star, and testing the range of identifications that one pop star can generate. The diversity is extraordinary”

My Very 1st Abstract Film!

This is my first try at creating an abstract film. I chose images that you would see outside in your daily life. I was focused on capturing movement and wind. My goal was to create something that would overwhelm the viewer. I juxtaposed calming "walk in the park" type images with the quick speed of the film. This opposition made the viewer's experience far from calming. This film was projected on the wall and played as loop for my show.

I really enjoyed making this film and there will definitely be more to come!

My New Wall Art!

The big brown UPS truck came about 5 minutes ago to deliver my new wall art! This was totally something I could have made and probably made better, but we got it anyways! Sometimes it's just easier to buy things online and even cheaper in the end than making things yourself. This numbers canvas is from Pottery Barn, which I might add has some really great things right now! The bronze tacks provide a unique way of hanging this wall art. So it doesn't just look like a image printed on a canvas on your wall. The best part about this new decoration is that it was on sale! Yay!

Little Beauties... ultimate kiddie queen showdown!

So, I love this ridiculous show! These poor little girls have spray tans, fake teeth (called flippers), cake make up, teased to- all-hell hair, and are taught to "flirt with their eyes". The creepiest part is that they have a swimsuit category! My favorite category is the "Pro-Am", this is where the little girls are supposed to "dance like the girls do in music videos" (as the lady on the show says).

The sad part is that the unattractive and overweight moms are living life vicariously through their daughters. They take these pageants so seriously. They cry when the girls win, they cry when the girls lose. The get mad at the girls for making mistakes. It is just sick!

But it all makes for a great show!!

Spring Break 2009

Ok, so spring break is different now that I am in grad school and old and have to work. Uh let's see...I'm not going to Daytona Beach, I'm not funneling beers, I'm not going from hotel to hotel looking for my friends, I'm not getting my tongue pierced or a new tattoo, I'm also not in a lime green bikini and 120 lbs.

So bummer, instead I am cleaning the house, going to the bank and grocery store, and working. At least I don't have a child, because then I would really not be having fun!

i just realized that I really only like the posts that have pictures or videos in them.

Flirty Girl Fitness Party-who wouldn't want to do this?

I think this might be a perfect way for me to get fit and improve my moves! As if I need any improvement in my dance moves!

The truth is finally revealed!

Crazy birthday night last night! We were celebrating Lauren and Ann's birthday's. I made cupcakes and brought them downtown, which was a good choice because they were a hit! After the ladies had plenty of drinks in their system, the birthday girls decided to have a CUPCAKE EATING COMPETITION! It wasn't the best competition because they each decided they would eat only 3 cupcakes. So, I guess they were seeing who could eat them the fastest. Ann was the winner and it might have had something to do with the fact that she was dipping her cupcakes in beer!

My favorite part of the night was when the big secret was revealed, although we ALL already knew. I do love it when people drink and blow their own cover! YAY for us, bad for them! The little slip up allowed us to open the floor for discussion of this previously forbidden topic. So, all in all it was a good night.

At least we got this really great pic that I like to call "Simply En Fuego"

Midterm is over!!

Yay! I made it through my midterm critique and it was actually wayyyyyy better than I thought it was going to be! I got some great feedback from my professors and presented my first abstract film. I was unsure about the film and really hesitant about showing it. As it turns out, some of the viewers liked my film more than my artwork (I'm not sure what that says about my Art - LOL). My artwork has really changed a lot in the short time that I have been in grad school and the change is for the better. I can only hope that it will continue to do so in the future. Hopefully, I will be showing my work somewhere soon!
