Featured Artist: Ryan Trecartin

Another crazy video artist! Ryan's videos are like Matthew Barney on speed! As one article puts it: "Trecartin’s process is founded upon a fluid yet orchestrated interaction between the artist and a group of collaborators—his friends, family, fellow artists, and various acquaintances he meets on the internet. These collaborators create and respond to a scripted variety of characters, themes, phrases, settings, and even vocal accents provided by Trecartin, who directs, stars in, and videotapes the resulting scenarios. Filmic segments then serve as raw material that the artist meticulously arranges and edits by digitally manipulating each frame and by intercutting and layering an assortment of synthetic imagery. The final work articulates a next-generation vision of contemporary culture and collaboration that collapses video, internet, television, performance, digital technology and sound into one unique manifestation, culminating in an entirely new mode of the medium." We were given an article from ARTFORUM to read in our class on this artist. I read the article before I looked the artist up so I really had no idea what to expect. The article was a little overwhelming, full of big words and adjectives, which actually were quite fitting for the subject matter. The class consensus went a little something like this, "at first we didn't like it and it was very annoying, but then we found ourselves not able to look away"...and then at the end everyone either loved Ryan's work or hated it. I find myself loving it. It is a little disturbing, a little scary, but a little brilliant as well. I think he has a purpose for the art he is creating, an agenda, and a clever way of dealing with various issues in our society. I hope you enjoy. I also encourage you to check out his 3-d assemblage/sculpture/installation pieces, which are also very successful in my opinion. You can decide for yourself whether you are a lover or a hater of Ryan Trecartin.

Wear your heart on your...neck?

Nargges, featured below, is displaying some wearable art made by a fellow student in my program. This piece is some necklace type thing that has a heart on the end of it. The metal bolts and wires coming out of the heart make it look like a heart ripped out of a robot. He creates very disturbing pieces of art and his subject matter is human body parts (fake), I guess you would say. These creations are part human/part mechanical and are, for the most part, functional. Unfortunately, he is not the most popular student due to his slacking. I do not hate this piece, but I do not like, love, or need it!

Trying out the blogpress app on my iPhone!

My goal is to be able to post pictures from this app. I was going to try and post an iPhone photo a day and see how far I could get. I know, I know...everyone does it, but who cares! Well, actually I haven't seen a blog with an "iPhone" photo a day! Here goes nothin!

Snuggie for dogs

Wow, this is so funny! I love it! I stole this picture, via skitch, from a video on their webstie so it is not the best quality. I encourage you to check it out. Especially if you like really cheesy videos, as I do. In all seriousness, my dogs would probably love this thing and feel pretty comfortable in it, but I think I could just go to the fabric store and make one.

Artwork for ANNIE!

So, I finally finished a commissioned piece for Annie. I did, however, drill a hole in my finger in the process of completing it. I think Annie likes it and I am happy to be making some money off of my artwork! YAY

Alright, time to blog again...

The new school year is about to start and we have a really great new MFA space that is going to rock! I am also going to be working at IZEA, in house, instead of the college. This will be great because it is soooo much closer to school. My 2nd year of grad school should be even better than the first. The program seems to be tightening up a little, which could really benefit everyone! Here are some pics from today:
